Tribute to Rob Appleyard
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Rob Appleyard, the former Mayor of Bath, Liberal Democrat councillor for Westfield, and trustee of the Life Project. Rob brought both wisdom and enthusiasm to the board, always ensuring that the Makers and members of Springs were at the heart of decision-making.
Rob had a wonderful sense of humour and a huge heart that is joyfully shared with us. This was apparent in the time we spent with Rob and shone through in the number of people attending and the tributes made during a service of Thanksgiving at Bath Abbey to celebrate his life. Rob, certainly had us all smiling with his choice of song to exit the Abbey being YMCA!
In an interview with Bath Voice in 2022, Rob shared his roots: “I’m an Essex boy, born in Clacton and grew up in Burnham-on-Crouch, known for its sailing.” He later moved to Weston-Super-Mare in his 20s, attracted by the vibrant music scene and a chance to meet new people. He worked in various roles, including as a welder, in retail, and later in corporate sales for BT.
Rob served as a councillor for Bath & North East Somerset from 2007 to 2023, representing both Westfield and Lambridge. He was Chair of Council in 2012/13 and had the honour of being Mayor of Bath in 2022/23. Rob held various important roles, including Cabinet Member for Adult Services from 2019 to 2021, and he was involved in numerous committees, such as the Planning and Licensing Committees and the Avon Pension Fund. He was passionate about advocating for the elderly and vulnerable, and worked on many local community projects that made a significant difference to the lives of many. Cllr Kevin Guy, Leader of the Council, shared, “Rob served the council and our community with great passion, commitment, and common sense.”
We are deeply grateful for Rob’s service and character, his time with the Life Project was limited due to ill health, but his impact continues to be felt. Just has he remained in our prayers we know the Life Project remained on his heart to the very end. We are confident that although we mourn his death, Rob will be enjoying meeting his Maker.
Our prayers are with Rob’s wife, Amanda, and family at this time.
